“Explore the Seafaring History and Beauty of Mukhohang Port and Mukho Lighthouse in Donghae”
Donghae’s Mukhohang Port and Mukho Lighthouse offer a glimpse into the city’s rich seafaring history and stunning natural beauty.
Mukhohang Port, which opened in 1941, was once the most prolific trading port on the east coast of Korea. Today, it serves as a center of fishing, with a large wholesale seafood market offering a wide array of freshly caught seafood. From early in the morning, merchants from across the country gather at the market to purchase the freshest catch. In addition to fresh seafood, dried fish is also available at the market.
Located atop Dongmunsan Mountain, Mukho Lighthouse was opened in June 1963 as an unmanned lighthouse guiding ships into Mukhohang Port. The two-story lighthouse, made of cement and standing 12 meters tall, stands out against the blue sea and sky, creating a fantastic image. The area surrounding the lighthouse has been turned into a small park, complete with a large rock inscribed with a poem about the sea near the park entrance.
Whether you’re interested in learning about the local history and culture or just want to enjoy a beautiful day by the sea, Mukhohang Port and Mukho Lighthouse are must-visit destinations in Donghae.
